“Accra Under Water: Floods Return With A Vengeance”
Once again, parts of Accra have been submerged after heavy rains, leaving residents counting losses and questioning why the perennial flooding problem remains unresolved.
From Kaneshie to Adabraka and parts of Tema, homes and businesses were inundated, displacing families and disrupting economic activity.
Residents say they are tired of the cycle.
“Every year, it is the same story—rain falls, and we lose everything,” lamented Mr. Kojo Lamptey, a shop owner at Kaneshie. “Are we not tired as a nation?
Experts blame a combination of poor drainage systems, indiscriminate building and choked gutters.
Environmental analyst Dr. Ama Boadu explained:
“We have built on waterways, ignored planning regulations and failed to maintain our drainage infrastructure. Nature will always respond.”
City authorities have promised action, including desilting exercises and enforcement of building regulations. However, many citizens remain sceptical.
“We hear promises every year, but nothing changes,” said Ms. Efua Nartey, a resident of Adabraka. “We need action, not words.”
The human cost is mounting, with families losing property and, in some cases, lives.
As the rains intensify, the urgency for a lasting solution has never been greater.
